Dirt: Introducing DirtDAO
Welcome to season 3.
An explanation of the Dirt DAO and our new pitch guidelines for the upcoming month of Dirt newsletters.
Today we’re officially launching the DirtDAO, a community of token holders that will help determine the future of Dirt. Although we haven’t done a large scale token sale, ~100 wallets currently hold $DIRT-S1 from prior NFT purchases.
On January 14th, we will open our first DAO vote to fund longform newsletter ideas for the next season of Dirt. The DirtDAO will fund four pitches based on the results of two ranked choice votes in January and February. Consider this DirtDAO in beta.
Below are the Dirt Season 3 pitch guidelines and a FAQ about the DirtDAO. If you currently hold $DIRT-S1, you can now join the DirtDAO channel in Discord. We have some exciting new feature formats and we are bringing back regular dispatches from Eliza Levinson recapping the latest in digital culture.
What is a DAO?
A Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) is a group of people holding the same crypto token or NFT, making decisions together through proportional governance — usually voting.
What does the Dirt DAO do?
The Dirt DAO currently controls a budget to greenlight and commission longform Dirt features. In the future, it might make decisions around NFT artwork, events, and Dirt product development.
Who can be a member?
Anyone who holds $DIRT-S1 tokens. ($DIRT-S1 Etherscan details are here.) Right now, all of our tokens are tied to NFT artwork that has already been sold. In the future, a final $DIRT token will be launched, airdropped to previous holders, and sold on its own.
Are there rules for members in good standing?
Yes, you must adhere to our community standards in order to participate in Discord and DAO votes.
What do I do if I already have $DIRT-S1 tokens?
Just hold tight, join our Discord token holders channel, and wait for the initial vote to be announced this month! When Dirt does its full token sale, all $DIRT-S1 holders will be automatically rewarded with the final $DIRT 5x the proportional value of the original tokens they hold.
Can I still get $DIRT-S1 tokens to participate in this vote?
The only way you can get tokens before the vote is to buy a Dirty S2 Summer Vibe NFT edition. (They’re for sale on OpenSea for .1 ETH.) We’ll airdrop each new buyer 20 $DIRT-S1 tokens, until that edition is sold out.
Will the value of a $DIRT token change over time?
The value of the final $DIRT token will fluctuate when we do our initial token sale, however the proportion of governance for early token holders will not change. After the initial sale, the DAO itself will decide whether to issue new tokens via vote.
What does this actually mean if I don’t care about crypto?
Well we hope it might convince you! Basically, people who buy our NFTs and hold tokens will be able to directly shape Dirt’s editorial process and pick our highest-budget stories. But if you ignore the DAO stuff, your reading experience will remain just about the same. (And if you do care about crypto: DirtDAO is an actual experiment in a functioning media DAO driving a publication.)
Dirt S3 Pitch Guidelines
Here are our new story formats. Pitching can be directed at any of these categories, but can also be outside them — we don’t want to miss anything great. Pitch us by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
STRΞAM (~300 words, $150)
A Dirt dispatch on anything streamable, whether that’s a TikTok trend, Netflix original or YouTube channel. Some past examples of streaming in Dirt include the Britishness of Succession, rewatching Mad Men and podcast ads.
IP Of The Week aka IP OTW (~300 words, $150)
A Dirt dispatch on a piece of intellectual property, be it a book adaptation, a podcast-branded t-shirt or a viral book cover. Some past examples of IP in Dirt include film novelizations, a viral sign and Dune satire.
What’s In Your Wallet? aka WIYW
A questionnaire for digital collectors. We interview interesting people about their NFTs and other digital collectibles. We won’t take freelance pitches for this section, but if there is someone you want to see interviewed definitely let us know!
DAO-Funded Longform Features (~1,000 words, $1,000)
The Dirt DAO is a community of $DIRT token holders that allocates a portion of the Dirt editorial budget by vote. Longform pitches will first be considered by the Dirt editorial team (currently Daisy and Kyle) before being shared with the DAO. Please don’t pitch this section if you aren’t comfortable with your pitch being seen in full by the DAO members!
